I like your reading of it.

Freakout was my other theory about the innocent. Even though he's tried to move on, he's never really grown up since his high school days and he's had to live with that. If there's anything that argues against his innocence, it would be that he maybe lost any innocence when they found the dead body. You could make the argument that he's as complicit in covering up Felix's murder as Riley is.

But, as well as the trade, the first two covers of the miniseries feature Felix as well. She was a bitch but she was always a bitch and that never changed. She never changed. I think we can read that as some of her innocence. Riley had to know what he was getting himself into when he married her.Scott Cederlundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07184941142922866755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2512929190680550228.post-74120720964033189122011-12-30T15:15:15.319-05:002011-12-30T15:15:15.319-05:00(spoilers ahead)

If the name was sheer coincidence, it's a startling coincidence -- or if it's meaningful, I cannot fathom what the meaning of it could possibly be.

--

Scott, I'd almost agree with your point about Lizzie's characterization, except there's the one Archie-like flashback where she deliberately gets in trouble at school to spend a week with Riley in dentention.

It takes reading a LOT into that page, but it suggests that she's willing to swallow her sense of right and wrong to be with him.

--

About the identity of "the last of the innocent," the trade cover certainly suggests Felix, but I wonder if it's really Freakout. He's certainly the last victim, and he's naive (if not innocent) in his belief that he's safe around a guy who just murdered his wife, framed his rival as a serial killer, and had his rival killed in jail.

Heck, he's awfully naive never to doubt that Riley didn't deliberately cause him to fall off the wagon.Bubbahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15257806404793138106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2512929190680550228.post-64562593122255389292011-12-30T13:42:03.366-05:002011-12-30T13:42:03.366-05:00Alan-- it was the Mr. Weatherbee and Ms. Grundy an...Alan-- it was the Mr. Weatherbee and Ms. Grundy analogues. Sure, she's undeveloped but she's also the one who goes along with Riley. She never asks any questions but just accepts the life Riley sweeps her up into. It's part of that dream girl status of hers. She falls perfectly into everything Riley wants from her like we all hope that our dream girl (or guy) would do if all the circumstances worked out like we wish for.

The more and more I think about it, I think that Felix is the last innocent in the book. Sure, she's far from what we think of as innocent but in the world that Brubaker and Phillips have set up, she's the one least changed by the world around her. Childhood traumas formed her and that's the life she's had since she moved into town and decided that Riley Richards was the man she wanted to play with. Even in the end as she's screwing around on Riley, she's the same Felix that she was in high school. If Brubaker and Phillips are trying to show high school as being Riley's idea of youth and innocence, then Felix is the one who grew up to be most like she was in high school. Lizzie even comments later on in the book as she and Riley are making out at a drive-in theater how different their relationship is now than it was back when they were kids.Scott Cederlundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07184941142922866755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2512929190680550228.post-43215444495479263212011-12-27T01:26:59.550-05:002011-12-27T01:26:59.550-05:00Hmm, did they ever reveal who was responsible for ...Hmm, did they ever reveal who was responsible for the series of murders decades earlier?ADDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14926713718402276984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2512929190680550228.post-6178862231543007282011-12-26T21:41:42.805-05:002011-12-26T21:41:42.805-05:00Thank y'all so much for letting me contribute....Thank y'all so much for letting me contribute. I've linked to the essays from A Criminal Blog.

One thing I didn't mention in my submission was something I noticed about the story but could never really make heads or tails of: Lizzie Gordon's name isn't a million miles from Lizzie Borden, the infamous ax murderer.

Odd, since the character in Criminal was the least corrupted of the bunch -- and Joseph's right, she was also the least developed.Bubbahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15257806404793138106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2512929190680550228.post-89507731481938991812011-12-23T08:53:22.375-05:002011-12-23T08:53:22.375-05:00Best darn Archie story I ever read.
